Family – Finance – ‘Private’ Divorces in Scotland?

Couples in Scotland will be able to end their marriage through a bespoke divorce service under new plans.  Couples will be able to hire a private judge and decide at the outset which matters need to be decided therefore avoiding lengthy arguments in court.  Lawyers are currently being trained in arbitration to enable them to offer this service to those that can afford it. 

It is hoped this system will reduce pressure on the court system.  Final hearings in divorce cases in Edinburgh’s court of session are currently not being scheduled until 2013.
