Biological Parents Rights After Adoption

Family and Child Law

New legislation could lead to biological parents no longer having the right to contact their children after they are taken into care or adopted.

Courts will be given the power to prevent birth parents making contact with their children via social media sites such as Facebook.  It is thought this is a growing problem for adopted children.

At present social workers are allowed to decide whether contact should be maintained.

Ongoing contact would only be allowed in exceptional circumstances when the parents can make a strong argument that it will be in the best interests of the child.
