In a recent case The High Court approved a request to serve a claim form on a defendant via Facebook.
The claimants, two investment managers, were making a £1.3m High Court claim against their broker and one of it’s employees for overcharged commission.
The claimants had served the claim to the employee’s home address but sought to serve his Facebook account as well as there was doubt he still lived there.
The judge, Mr Justice Teare, was satisfied that the account was active, that it was being checked regularly and that it belonged to the employee in question.
This is the first time service by Facebook has been approved at such a high level, previously only being approved by a county court. The High Court has previously allowed service of an injunction by Twitter.
