New Guidelines to Help Doctors Prevent Neglect

Family & Children

On 3 September 2012 new guidance from the General Medical Council (GMC) to help doctors protect children from abuse and neglect came into effect.

The guidance has been issued to 230,000 doctors and is the result of a two year working group.

The guidance states that doctors must have the confidence to act if they believe a child may be being abused or neglected.  This action will be justified even if no risk to the child is found as long as the concerns are reasonable and appropriate action has been taken.

A GMC survey by the website Netmums found that 94% of parents agreed that doctors have a duty to find out if a child is at risk even if they are only treating adult patients.
