Nigerian Customary Law Applied to Divorce Proceedings

Family Finance

A husband has been allowed to rely on Nigerian law during his divorce proceedings.

Mr Prest, an oil tycoon, is attempting to overturn a ruling to award his ex-wife £17.5m in a divorce settlement.

Mr Prest argued that his assets were held in trust to provide for his children and nieces and nephews under his native Nigerian Itskiri customary law.

His company had been set up using an inheritance from his father.  Under Itskiri law Mr Prest was now the head of the family and obliged to provide for his siblings and their children.
