The Prime Minister, David Cameron, announced plans on 10 October 2011 to make forced marriages a criminal offence. At the moment the breaking of a Forced Marriage Prevention Order is criminalised, however, Mr Cameron has asked the Home Secretary to consult on making forced marriage a criminal offence in its own right. Mr Cameron outlined the plans at a speech in London to highlight government proposals to bring immigration under control and reduce the number of immigrants from outside the EU.
