Proposed Inheritance Rights for Cohabitants
Family Law
The Law Commission has revealed plans to give unmarried, cohabiting couples inheritance rights if a partner dies without making a Will.
The reforms propose that couples with children would inherit their partner’s assets if they had lived together for two years. It also proposes that couples should be able to inherit their partner’s entire estate if they have lived together for five years and a partner has died without making a Will.
