Danger of Unregulated Will Writers

The Chief Legal Ombudsman for England and Wales, Adam Sampson, has highlighted how thousands of people are being ripped off by unregulated will writers in his first report.

The legal ombudsman was appointed in 2010 to act on complaints made about qualified lawyers.  The most complaints they have received concern wills, conveyancing and family law.  Such areas of work can be carried out by individuals and organisations that are unregulated and unqualified.  If something goes wrong the customer will find they have no way of seeking redress as they fall outside the powers of legal ombudsman.

The report has prompted calls for more protection for consumers.  The Ministry of Justice has recognised that will writing is an important issue and welcomed the report.
