The definition of domestic violence has been widened to cover psychological abuse and controlling behaviour.
The changes will be implemented in March 2013. It is hoped the broadened definition will increase awareness of domestic abuse and what it is.
The Home Office says more prosecutions could be brought as a result. They also want more youngsters suffering an abusive relationship to come forward and access the support they need.
