Family Law
From September 2012 Manchester and Nottingham began trialling a scheme known as ‘Clare’s Law’.
Under the scheme women and men can apply to the police to check if a new partner has a history of domestic violence. Friends and family who are concerned someone is at risk are also able to ask for these details.
The law is named after Clare Woods who was killed in 2009 by a man she met on Facebook. Her family began a campaign for the law after discovering her killer had a history of violence.
