Wealthy businessman attempts to leave his estate solely to male heirs, cutting wife and daughters out
In a recent case in the Royal Courts of Justice we discovered that wealthy businessman, Karnail Singh, who died in 2021, made a will with the intent to leave his estate ‘solely down the male line.’ The will completely excluded his widow, 83 years of age, who had raised their seven children and was left living off state benefits.
In Kaur v Estate of Karnail Singh & Others, the judge ruled against the terms of the will to make provision for the widow. Mr Justice Peel, who heard the case, concluded the wife had played a full role in the marriage and was entitled to 50% of her husband’s £1 million estate.
