Employment Law

The government published its response to flexible working and flexible parental leave on 13 November 2012.

The government will proceed with its plans to extend the right to request flexible working.  The right will be available to all employees from 2014 provided they have completed 26 weeks of continuous employment.

A new system of statutory parental rights is also to be introduced from 2015.  Parents will be able to share statutory leave and pay that is currently only available to mothers.  The statutory leave can be taken by each parent one after the other, or both at the same time as long as the joint amount does not exceed the amount available to the couple.  Entitlement to unpaid parental leave will also increase from 13 weeks to 18 weeks for each child from March 2013.
